Costume Ideas

This is a mood board which includes costume ideas which I want my use within my video. Also includes makeup and hair ideas, all these fit my target audience and also to my genre of the video which is indie/alternative. The makeup I have included on the above collage are easily accessible from stores such as Debenhams and Superdrug.

Evaluation Question 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

http://prezi.com/_mzedryvlpft/evaluation-question-three/
I gained audience feedback through asking peers to view my video and asked questions such as 'What genre do you believe this is be?' I am pleased to have found that my feedback was what I had hoped, I found that 80% of the feedback identified the correct genre I was portraying. I am pleased that they used the video and the music to build on what they believed the proposed genre to be and that from the camera work why I had shot it the way I did. I was grateful that some audience feedback included their awareness of the scenery and could recall where the video was shot. I also gained feedback through asking peers in my class by leaving feedback on post it notes, I have included all this information in the prezi above.

I tried to dress Lorna (video actress) in an alternative way. I found that people who like Indie/Alternative music tend to leave their hair natural and wear their make-up quite natural-looking, possibly with eyeliner on. I styled Lorna the way I believe the target audience would dress so they would be able to relate back to what she is wearing or even feel inspired.

Evaluation Question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

My main product with the ancillary texts have an effective combination as they help to gain insight as to what my product will look like and what my aims and ambitions are for the final product.

I have researched inspirational texts for the print tasks using artists of the same genre such as Lucy Rose and Adele. Both these artists inspired me in different ways, they also inspired me in their music videos. Adele was my main inspiration and research within ancillary texts, she inspired me to use black and white within my music video it gave a soul/indie feel to the video which made me feel relaxed whilst watching the video. Lucy Rose's poster inspired me with the pose she portrays within the poster, she is looking down with an innocent smile, the light compliments the image very well also.
Within my music video, I used an actress which was not the female which features within the print work, to show difference in character and portrayal within people.

Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The above image is a collage that I created on Photoshop to provide a brief overview of my music video. I looked a range of posters, CD covers and music videos from different genres for inspiration before I began my own work.

I decided to continue with the genre I followed in my AS coursework which was Indie/Alternative as I enjoyed creating my coursework last year but I also listen to this genre of music quite a lot. I also thought that I had the background knowledge through the research I had conducted last year but expand on this further and develop my understanding on this genre. I wanted to make to keep something from my AS coursework. By doing this it will make the posters appear more realistic and by adding quotations I hoped to make the artist seem more realistic and popular only hoping to grab a wider audience. For example; if audience saw the poster and seen poster reviews on the artist they may become intrigued into listening to their music or researching the artists musical history. I featured a made up artist website to make the audience believe that Charlotte Rose is a popular enough artist to have an official website which includes tour dates, merchandise and chance to purchase tickets.

I experimented with a lot of different fonts in various colours and sizes before I finally decided on which ones to include. For my digi-pak I chose to use a feminine curly font for the artists name 'Charlotte Rose' which was a red colour, associates with her last name, Rose. I chose to use a simple yet bold font for the albums name, this bold text stood out because it has small dots within the letters, the album being called 'Unfaithful'. I also think that by using a simple font rather than a more complex font for the name of the album and for the introductory titles at the beginning of my music video not only makes the text easier to read but gains insight as to what the music video is about.

I also tried to link in the idea of nature and simple fonts with the genre of music. This is because within the genre of Indie/Alternative there are different styles of music through different tempos and rhythms. For example, some songs by Indie/Alternative artists may have quite an upbeat sound whereas others are more slow and acoustic. The song that I chose for my music video had an acoustic sound which made it seem very raw and natural to the ear. Therefore, by using simple fonts I tried to make the idea of nature more apparent through my coursework.

I chose to have my model and actress to be wearing 'natural' looking make-up with eye liner flicks that most Indie/Alternative artists have, creates difference that stands out. I decided that if they wore too much make-up then they would look out of place in the natural settings that I filmed in making them stand out too much wouldn't look good on tape and would not match the tone and the feel of the music. I also thought that the model and actress should have natural looking hair rather than styling it so asked them to leave it, within the Digi-pak Charlotte has her hair up in a loose bun and in the poster she has wavy curls which look rather natural. Lorna who features in my music video also has natural hair which makes her look approachable as she looks very natural.

As a result of wanting to make my music video seem 'natural', I did not us a tripod but shot freehand. This did result in some shaky shots but it did result in my video looking more realistic. If I were to shoot my video in a studio, I would have used a tripod and would have wanted my footage to look less shaky, however for the setting of my video and for the effect that I hoped to create, I believed that shooting everything hand held worked out quite well.

Another thing that I did in order to try and make my media products seem more real was to include logos. In my AS coursework I included the virgin sign, as I advertised a chance to win tickets for V festival. This is included in my A2 work, it also bring familiarity and allows it to become more real and recognisable

Evaluation Question 4

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

When I began my A2 coursework, since September last year. I have used www.blogger.com to create an easily accessible build up of inspirational texts, drafts and final pieces. At first using the same blogger  which I used for AS caused quite a confusion especially how I hadn't used the software in a few months and they had also updated the system. So the layout and format had changed so I had to relearn myself the ways of blogging again. The huge pro of blogging would be the freedom of being able to write down your ideas in whatever creative way you know of rather than simply writing an essay. Also if you prefer to just simply write essays you can add images to make it your own and help you revise from it, adding images and also videos is a quick and easy step. This essentially made my blog have much more in-depth, rich data as I have used many different sites and forms of media.

I also used YouTube to follow through with research on inspirational songs of the Indie/Alternative genre. I found this site very useful as it gave me instant access to a wide range of songs which were free to listen too as many times as I wished and it also allowed me to copy and paste the link or videos onto another network site. I also used this website to upload my finished music video. I hoped that by doing this I was able to show my work to a wider audience as people from all over the world can access it, it could also help people in the later years who may want to see examples of real students A2 work and how they approached the video making.

Another website I used was www.flick.com, I used this to reflect development in the creation of my print tasks and also to post pictures of the people featuring within my print tasks.

Other media technology that I used was Adobe Photoshop. This proved to be quite challenging as I had forgotten everything that I had learnt on how to use it, meaning that I had to learn myself to get used to it made me feel a little behind than others in my class as I wasn't as advanced with the software as were they. Also I had problems with the programmes on the mac computers in college as the college had installed a different system to the ones of the usual computers which causes slight confusion for me.

In addition to the technologies that I had to become familiar with new media technologies. For example, I had never recorded any footage on a video camera before. I also had to learn how to edit the videos into one that I shot using Adobe Premiere Pro. I found this was time consuming as I wasn't aware of how to edit the clips and put them into one, cutting sound out and adding the soundtrack in also. Also applying transitions was also found difficult as I couldn't work out how to apply them to my video but after getting my head round it, it seemed to be fine.

Applying structuralist theories to my A2 coursework

Narrative
I think that the structure of my narrative will be fragmented. I am going to film my video at Hylton castle, in the forest near by and the pond which is also surrounded by forest. The lyrics talk about admiring her hometown which could link to Anthony Goodwin's theory that music videos make links between the lyrics and the visuals. Goodwin suggested that lyrics will make constant reference to the visuals on screen and the visuals will reinforce what the lyrics say. My music video supports this as theory as I am basing my narrative on the lyrics and what they mean and what they say. Todorov's idea that narratives have an equilibrium and a disequilibrium but the new equilibrium doesn't apply to my coursework wont have such a strong story, there is no resolution to be found and there wont be a disruption to overcome.  Barthes idea of the Hermenuetic Code which refer to the element of a story which is not fully explained in order to build intrigue because audience will begin to question.

Genre
The genre of my music video will be Indie/Alternative.

Setting
The setting will mainly be in a forest. I am lucky to live a five minute walk from a forested area so it is easily accessible  This means that I can make the visuals with me living so close to the forest. This fits in with Saussure's theory that meaning can be relational - although the filming would be done in a forest you will only see trees and audience will build suspensions of the surrounding area.
Props

The only prop within my music video is a cigarette in which the actress smokes, this is to replicate her withdrawal issues she suffers with from her hometown.

Audience Theories

Blumler and Katz (1974) devised the Uses and Gratifications theory which is the idea that audiences use media texts in different ways: diversion, personal relationships, personal identity and surveillance. I can relate this theory to my coursework because the audience will be able to divert themselves away from their own lives whilst watching and use it as a form of escapism. They will be able to fully immerse themselves into it and forget about any pressures in their life that are currently bothering them. By getting into the song they can allow themselves to indulge in the music, forgetting every worry that they have at that moment in time.  My coursework may also relate to the idea of personal identity because they will be able to identify with the narrative. The story is all about reminiscing about home and memories that home holds and as my target audience are aged between about 17 - 25 they are quite young and may have recently moved away from home or thinking about moving home, so this song could help them decide in whichever way they read it. This ties in with personal relationships too as they will be able to compare their own life to that of the one shown in the music video. Additionally the idea of using my music video as surveillance may also be applied.

Stuart Hall's Reception theory can be applied to my coursework as well because I have an idea about the narrative and wish to make my preferred reading, that reading being that home holds many memories and they miss being at home. However the audience may read it in a negotional or oppositional way instead. For example, they might interpret the actors wandering around the forest as people who are lost instead of simply following the roads and places she went when she was young.
